On 6 November 1948 the Libarian of Congress sailed for England on the Queen Elizabeth taking the manuscript with him (and occasionally sleeping with it under his pillow). On 12 November he presented to the British Museum 'as an expression of thanks to a noble people who kept Hitler at bay for a long period single-handed'.
