Lewis Carroll flyttede ind i Oxford-kollegiet Chreist Church 1851 og forlod det aldrig. I juli 1851 gæstede han byens "Great Exhibition":

"his eye was immediately drawn to some of the 'ingenious pieces of mechanisms' on display, including a tree full of 'birds chirping and hopping from branch to branch exactly like life', with another bird depicted 'trying to eat a beetle' in uncomfortable little jerks, as if it was choking'."
